transcribe.so Is Now a ChatGPT Plugin: Who Said What, and When
transcribe.so is now available in ChatGPT's plugin directory. The plugin is called transcribe.so, and its tagline says what it is for: who said what, and when.
Install it once, sign in with your transcribe.so account, and you can ask ChatGPT to transcribe a link, answer questions about a recording, or hand you subtitles, all inside the chat. The transcripts land in the same library you use in the web app.
What the plugin does
The plugin connects ChatGPT to your transcribe.so account. From a conversation, ChatGPT can:
- Transcribe a link. Paste a YouTube video, a podcast episode page, or a direct link to an audio or video file. You get a transcript with speaker labels and word-level timestamps.
- Find who said what, and when. Ask about a recording and get the exact quote back with the speaker label and the timestamp it was said at, so you can check it yourself.
- Answer questions with citations. Ask about one recording or your whole library. Answers cite the moments they come from instead of paraphrasing from memory.
- Export what you need. SRT or VTT subtitles with speaker labels, chapter timestamps for a video description, and show notes drafted from the transcript.
The plugin uses the same account, the same engine and the same library as the web app. A transcript ChatGPT creates is there when you open transcribe.so in your browser, and everything you already transcribed is searchable from ChatGPT.
How to install it
- Open the transcribe.so plugin listing in ChatGPT.
- Click Install plugin.
- Sign in with your transcribe.so account when ChatGPT asks. If you do not have one yet, you can create it at transcribe.so first.
That is the whole setup. There is no API key to copy and nothing to configure. Sign-in uses OAuth, so ChatGPT never sees your password, and you can revoke its access at any time under Connected apps in your transcribe.so settings.
Three prompts to start with
These are the prompts shown on the listing, and they cover the main jobs the plugin does:
| Prompt | What it works on | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| "Transcribe this YouTube video and list the chapters with timestamps" | A new link | A transcript in your library, plus chapter titles with start times |
| "Who mentioned the launch date in my transcripts, and when?" | Your existing library | The exact quotes, with speaker labels and timestamps |
| "Give me SRT subtitles with speaker labels for my latest recording" | Your most recent transcript | An SRT subtitle file with speaker labels |
The first creates a new transcript from a link. The second searches the transcripts you already have and answers with quotes, speakers and timestamps. The third turns an existing transcript into a subtitle file you can drop into an editor.
Links in ChatGPT, files in the web app
ChatGPT works from links: YouTube videos, podcast pages and direct media URLs. To transcribe a file that lives on your computer, such as a meeting recording or a voice memo, upload it in the transcribe.so web app. Once it is transcribed, ChatGPT can search it, quote it and export subtitles from it like any other recording in your library.
Deleting is a confirmed step
The plugin can delete a transcript when you ask it to. Deleting is marked as a destructive action, the plugin is told to confirm with you before it deletes anything, and ChatGPT shows write actions for your approval unless you chose to always allow them. Reading, searching and exporting never change anything in your account.
Other agents work the same way
The ChatGPT plugin is one of several ways in. The same server works with Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini (through the Antigravity CLI, or Gemini CLI with a paid API key) and any client that speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The agent page has the setup step for each one, and the MCP section of the developer docs covers the server, sign-in and the full tool list.
If you prefer to wire it up by hand, ChatGPT's developer mode still works too: add https://transcribe.so/mcp as a connector and sign in. Developer mode is available on paid ChatGPT plans. For most people the plugin is the simpler path.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a transcribe.so account to use the plugin?
Yes. The plugin signs in with your transcribe.so account, and transcripts are saved to that account's library. Your existing plan and wallet apply exactly as they do in the web app.
Can the plugin transcribe a file from my computer?
Not from ChatGPT directly. ChatGPT works from links, so upload local files in the transcribe.so web app. After that, the plugin can search, quote and export them.
Which links can I paste?
YouTube videos, podcast episode pages and direct links to audio or video files. If a link cannot be read, download the file and upload it in the web app instead.
Is the plugin different from the transcribe.so Custom GPT?
Yes. The plugin replaces the older Custom GPT, which is retired after December 11, 2026. The plugin connects through our MCP server and works with your whole library, so it is the one to install.
