Transcribe audio in ChatGPT

ChatGPT can work with some audio on its own, depending on your plan and the file. For a full transcript of a video, podcast or meeting with who said what and when, add the transcribe.so plugin and paste a link.

Watch the how-to. Install the plugin, sign in once, paste a video link. Open on YouTube.

How to transcribe audio in ChatGPT

  1. Add the plugin

Open transcribe.so in ChatGPT's plugin directory, click Install plugin, and sign in with your transcribe.so account, or create one. No key to paste.

  2. Paste a link

Drop a YouTube video, an Apple Podcasts episode or a link to an audio or video file into the chat and ask for a transcript.

  3. Ask

Ask for who said what, chapters, a quote with its timestamp, or subtitles. Ask for the timestamp and, on YouTube, it links to that moment in the video.

Try asking

  • Transcribe this and tell me who said what. [link]
  • Transcribe this interview and tell me who said what about pricing, with timestamps.
  • Give me chapters with timestamps for this episode's description.
  • Find where they talk about the launch date and quote it.
  • Give me SRT subtitles for this video.
  • Across my last three meetings, what did we decide about hiring? Cite the moments.

Questions

Can ChatGPT transcribe audio on its own?

ChatGPT can work with some audio files you attach, depending on your plan and the file. For a full transcript with a speaker label and a timestamp on every line, chapters, and answers that cite the exact second, add the transcribe.so plugin.

How do I add transcribe.so to ChatGPT?

Open the transcribe.so plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory, click Install plugin, and sign in with your transcribe.so account. On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu, a workspace admin may need to allow it, or can add https://transcribe.so/mcp as a custom MCP server.

Can I upload a file from my computer?

ChatGPT sends links to transcribe.so, not files. Upload the file in the transcribe.so web app, then ask ChatGPT about it, since both use the same library.

Which links work?

YouTube, Apple Podcasts episodes, Vimeo, Loom, SoundCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox share links, and direct audio or video file links. Spotify links don't work yet. The link has to open without a sign-in.

How much does it cost?

New accounts get free credit. After that you pay per recording or pick a plan. See pricing.

Where do my transcripts go?

Into your transcribe.so library, the same one the web app shows. Read, search or share them there, and ask ChatGPT about them later.

Ask instead of rewatching.

Add the plugin once, then paste a link into ChatGPT.
