How to transcribe a Zoom recording
Find the recording first. A local recording is saved in a Zoom folder inside Documents, in a subfolder named after the meeting, usually as an MP4 plus an audio-only M4A. A cloud recording is downloaded from the Recordings page of the Zoom web portal. Pick either file here; the audio-only M4A is the smaller upload and gives the same transcript.
An MP4 up to 1 GB uploads as it is. If the MP4 is over 1 GB, your browser pulls the audio track out of it before anything is uploaded, so for those files only the audio is sent. The upload is resumable, and once it finishes the recording joins the transcription queue and the page shows your position and an estimated wait. When it is done, the transcript appears right on this page with a timestamp on every line and a label for each speaker.
A meeting transcript, not an auto-caption dump
Meeting recordings are the hard case for transcription: several voices, people talking over each other, accents and mixed languages on one call. The free tool uses the same transcription pipeline as our paid product, on infrastructure we operate, with speaker labels on every line, and per-language accuracy is published openly on our benchmarks page. Your recording is not sent to third-party AI providers.
Free limits for meeting recordings
One free transcription per day, shared across all free tools. The meeting can run up to 45 minutes; the MP4 can be up to 2 GB and the audio-only M4A up to 1 GB. Timestamps, speaker labels and automatic language detection across 52 languages and dialects are included. Free transcripts are deleted automatically about 24 hours after they finish, so copy the minutes out or sign up to keep them.
A free account adds signup credit, longer meetings, exports (TXT, SRT, VTT and more), a searchable library across every call, and cited answers to questions like what was decided about the budget. See pricing for the full picture.
More free tools
Other MP4 files have the free MP4 to text converter, other video formats the free video to text converter, audio-only recordings go in the free audio to text converter, and one-on-one conversations in the free interview transcription tool. Recordings already on YouTube work from the link in the free YouTube transcript generator. All of them are collected on the free tools page.
